Experiments with growing beans initiated in “The Discovery Room” eventually developed into a body of work in which “The Bean” becomes microcosm, demonstrating the fundamental cycle of growth and change, life and death. This work, entitled “Short Lives” does not seek to make statements or draw conclusions. Rather, by experimenting and observing, setting in motion natural processes with attempts to assert control, but without a defined agenda, the work evolves organically and each viewer is invited to make of it what he or she will, dependent upon the thoughts and feelings they bring to it and the circumstances of their viewing. The processes involved have been repeatedly observed and documented, with the remaining materials and documentation preserved as evidence of this attempt to make sense of a brief existence.
